Château du Cheylard d'Aujac, a veritable sentinel of the Cévennes, has been rooted in history since the 13th century, majestically dominating the upper Cèze valley from a rocky spur close to Mont Lozère. Offering a 360-degree panoramic view in an unspoilt natural setting, this castle has traversed the ages with a rich and captivating history.
Perched at an altitude of 600 metres, at the crossroads of the Gard, Lozère and Ardèche departments, Château du Cheylard d'Aujac stands proudly on its promontory, bearing witness to its glorious past. It is the last intact vestige of a network of fortifications built along an itinerary dating back to the Middle Ages, mentioned as early as 1270 under the name Val Cezarencha.
Remarkably well-preserved, this castle is one of the few of its era still inhabited today, offering visitors an authentic experience of medieval life.
From the square tower to the round tower, the château reflects the architectural evolution from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance, bearing witness to the different eras through which this imposing fortress has passed. Under the protection of its imposing ramparts, a farm has been converted, including a dovecote, sheepfold, cloede and chapel, adding a touch of everyday life to this historic site.
Now renovated, the Château du Cheylard d'Aujac houses a store and exhibition rooms, offering visitors captivating video projections and displays. In addition, the site regularly hosts one-off and ongoing events, such as "La Malabestia", a historical re-enactment of daily life at the château at the time of the Beast of Gévaudan in the 18th century, which takes place every first weekend in August.
In short, the Château du Cheylard d'Aujac is much more than just a historic monument; it's a living testimony to the region's history and culture, offering visitors a fascinating immersion in the medieval and Renaissance past of this emblematic Cévennes region. Website
