Located at the end of the world, in an austere and inhospitable landscape, lie the remains of the Fort de Peccais, also known as the "Salt Fort".
In contrast to its isolated setting, this fort played a crucial role in the regional economy for several centuries. From the creation of the gabelle, the first state tax on salt, by Philippe Le Bel in 1286, to its abolition by the Revolution in 1790, Peccais was the economic heart of the region. The salt produced in Peccais was essentially redistributed throughout the kingdom via the Rhône, making it a vital element of trade.
The strategic importance of salt became even more apparent during the Wars of Religion, when control of the salt pans became a crucial issue. In 1569, the construction of the fort secured permanent control over the salt pans and canals used to transport salt. Placed at the crossroads of the Bourgidou canal and the "Peccais à Sylvéréal" canal, the fort became a coveted point for warlords: holding Peccais meant controlling the whole region.
After the abolition of the gabelle tax in 1790, the fort gradually lost its importance. It was guarded solely by a company of invalids, and its condition gradually deteriorated. However, during the Second World War, its proximity to the coast once again made it a strategic location. The occupying forces installed several shelters and blockhouses.
Today, the remains of Fort de Peccais are waiting to be showcased. Only a few structures, such as the two cisterns, the trapezoidal plan and the molded base of a watchtower, have survived, testifying to the historical importance of this site, once crucial to the salt trade.
