The Pradier Fountain

Adress : 1 Esplanade Charles de Gaulle - 30000 Nîmes

The Pradier fountain, erected on the esplanade of Nîmes on June 1, 1851, is a monumental work in white marble designed by the architect Charles Questel and sculpted by James Pradier.

This fountain is distinguished by its grandeur and symbolism. At the heart of its composition stands a young woman, allegory of the city of Nîmes, bearing on her head the famous Roman emblems of the city: the arenas and the colonnade of the Maison Carrée.

Surrounding the central statue, four seated figures adorn the fountain. Each figure, representing an important river in the Nîmes region, is associated with a basin collecting water. Thus, the Fountain of Nîmes, the original source of the Roman colony, is symbolized by Nemausa, while the Gardon, the Fountain of Eure and the Rhone are represented respectively by Vardo, Ura and Rhodano, their Latin names engraved on their base.

This fountain embodies both the artistic beauty and the deep history of Nîmes, testifying to the cultural and natural richness of the region.  Website
